Tom McGuinness

Born1926 inWitton Park, County Durham

Died2006

Tom McGuinness spent 40 years working both above and below ground in the collieries of the region. Through his artwork he captured his workmates, their surroundings and the unity that existed between them.

He exhibited throughout the country and became well known for experimenting with various artistic techniques from pencil to oil paint and from Conté to lithograph.

As the pit head wheels were taken down and the landscape where the mines once stood began to return to nature, McGuinness continued painting.  Working from sketchbooks, memory and imagination his body of work never stopped growing.

Tom McGuinness : Memories

  • My dad worked in the mines as a Surveyor and gave Tommy a lift to work for many years, Tom came to our house in the seventies to help my sister with her O level art work, he guided her through a painting of our back lane , it looked very much like Tom's artwork, I remember him being a very quiet man , my dad always regretted not buying any of his work.
