Women Waiting at the Pithead

Women Waiting at the Pithead

Women waiting for news of their menfolk after a disaster is a recurring theme in Tom McGuinness’ work.

In Tom’s depictions, the women cluster together in small groups around the colliery with trepidation reflected on their sombre faces. Here, the blue teardrop of one woman’s headscarf draws our eye to the dominant headgear of the pit and the moon beyond.
