Crucifixion No. 1

Crucifixion No. 1

'Then Jesus, crying out with a loud voice, said, “Father, into your hands I commend my spirit.” Having said this, he breathed his last.' (Luke 23:46, NRSVUE)

In this crucifixion scene, Tom McGuinness responded to the biblical text by including the hands of God, waiting to receive Christ’s spirit. His design for the sanctuary window at St Mary’s Church in Bishop Auckland took inspiration from the same text. Poignantly, Tom’s body lay underneath this rose window for the night preceding his funeral.
