North Country
Painted from "Busty" Pit Heap, Shildon Bank, 1949. Showing Coronation and school middle distance. Auckland Park and Pit beyond with Grange Hill in background.
Myles Meehan emphasises the dominance of the railway in the landscape near Bishop Auckland, as well as its role in carrying coal. This view was taken from "Busty" Pit Heap, Shildon Bank, which was better known as Adelaide Colliery. In the foreground lies the village of Coronation, with the mine at Auckland Park visible behind. The railway in front of the school heads west, while the main line to Bishop Auckland cuts across the scene. Both carry mineral traffic.
A North Eastern Railway plan of the South Durham Coalfield in 1896 shows the railways in this scene, as well as the collieries that were connected by rail. Courtesy of the North Eastern Railway Association.
