Marching On

Music and song was a thriving tradition in mining communities. Men were often members of male voice choirs or choral societies. Another popular musical activity was playing in a colliery band.

Music and song was a thriving tradition in mining communities. Men were often members of male voice choirs or choral societies. Another popular musical activity was playing in a colliery band.

As early as 1827 every large colliery in the North East was said to have its own band, with many musicians achieving national and even international recognition.

Bands played an important part in galas or other celebrations centred on mining. Being in a band was and still is, a much respected skill and would unite people from all walks of life, giving a sense of warmth and togetherness.
