• My great grandad Thomas Hindson was a pitman at Seaham Colliery. He won an award as a rifleman, a corporal in the second Durham (Seaham) volunteers. He was due to receive a Queens Award for his rifle mastery and swapped his shift so he could travel to London. Sadly he was killed on that shift in the disaster on 7th September 1880.
