Tom Lamb

Tom Lamb

Born 1928 in Beamish, County Durham

Died 2016

Tom took his sketchbook with him on his first day working underground, using his colleagues and his brother Jacky as subjects.

After retirement, he used this record of his life as a miner to produce a series of artworks detailing the daily tasks, harsh conditions and sense of camaraderie felt amongst the men.  With the closure of Craghead Colliery in 1969, he began to work at the DLI Museum and Art Gallery in Durham where he was able to indulge his love of art by helping to hang exhibitions and paint the backgrounds of displays.

Tom Lamb : Memories

  • A friend of mine, Pete Norton, wrote a book about Tom Lamb, his life and paintings, working with the artist shortly before he died.
Pete did an exhibition and sale of some of his work, and I treated myself to one of his landscapes, which I enjoy every day.
