Tisa Hess

Tisa Hess

Born 1903 in Germany

The daughter of a German general, Tisa married a Jewish businessman. They were encouraged to leave Germany in 1934 because of the rise of the Nazi regime. Her brother was later executed following a failed assassination attempt on Hitler.

Having studied at the Berlin Academy of Art, she arrived in London with connections in the art world.  Learning of the ‘distressed areas’ of Britain, in particular the North East, she was invited to visit the Spennymoor Settlement and went on to teach  the students there drawing and wood carving.

Hers was the only direct tuition that the Sketching Club members received.
