Robert Heslop

Robert Heslop

Born 1907 in Spennymoor

An early member of the Spennymoor Settlement Sketching Club, Bob Heslop worked alongside Norman Cornish at Dean and Chapter Colliery.

He was known for his consistent commitment to mine safety – his pen and ink drawings reminding workers of their responsibilities were a familiar sight in the lamp room at the pit.

Commissioned to produce a series of paintings of collieries for Durham County Council in the 1970s, Heslop was happy just to be creating art.   The body of work he has left behind ranges from painting to sketching, in mediums from watercolour, to gauche, to silkscreen printing.
