Norman Cornish
Born 1919 in Spennymoor
Died 2014
Growing up in Spennymoor, Norman found the subjects he needed for his art all around him.
From the pit road he walked along when he started working at Dean and Chapter Colliery to the chip van that was a familiar sight to all of the inhabitants of the town.
Documenting the streets and people around him makes Cornish’s artworks familiar to anyone growing up in an industrial town. His ability to capture the charm of the characters and transfer that on to paper or canvas gives his works a nostalgic appeal that has stood the test of time.
