John Tipton

Conscripted as a Bevin Boy during the second world war, John Tipton moved from rural Oxfordshire to Ferryhill, County Durham.
He was assigned to Dean and Chapter Colliery where he quickly progressed, training new Bevin Boys as they arrived. John was inspired by his surroundings and began to submit safety cartoons and logo designs to national magazines. When his service was over, he left the industry and pursued an artistic career, eventually working for The Observer newspaper as a graphic artist
