John Coffey

John Coffey came from a mining family in County Durham. His father worked as a senior clerk for the Durham Miners’ Association, while his grandfathers and uncles worked in the pits around Houghton-le-Spring.

With encouragement from his mother, John was able to pursue his education, including a degree in metallurgy and a PhD in physics. He then worked for 25 years in the electricity generating industry before retraining as a maths teacher.

John took up art as a hobby and took drawing classes at Manchester School of Art. Now retired, he pursues his art whenever he finds inspiration or undertakes a commission. His other hobbies are classical music and computer graphics.
