Oliver Kilbourn

Oliver Kilbourn

Born 1904 in Ashington

Died 1993

One of the founding members of the Ashington Group and one of only two members left when the group disbanded in 1983, Kilbourn produced a huge body of work documenting the tasks faced daily by miners underground.

He began his working life as a pom pom boy at the age of 14, a task which was typical for a lad fresh from school.  Progressing on to work underground as a putter at the age of 16, he joined the Ashington Group and was the member who first suggested an Art Appreciation class.  Kilbourn combined his passion for art with his desire to illustrate his and his colleagues working life.
