Harry Malkin

Leaving school at 15 in 1966, Harry's dad got him a job at the local pit and he worked in the coal industry until 1985.

 At Fryston Colliery he worked as a fitter, maintaining and repairing the machinery. Growing up, he had always been artistic and remembers when he was 8 or 9 years old, his father returning home from the pit each day and letting him draw on his bare back because the family couldn't afford drawing paper. He would draw eagles, dragons, and other creatures. In 1986, he won an award for coming first in a coal industry national art competition.
