William Hindmarsh
Born 1942 in Sedgefield, County Durham
Largely self-taught, Bill is now a full-time artist, drawing inspiration from his time in the mining industry.
Bill grew up in Northumberland and left school at 15 to work at Linton Colliery, near Ashington. At the age of 18, he won a prize at the National Coal Board’s art exhibition and his first oil painting was bought by Matthias Spencer & Sons, manufacturers of coal cutting equipment. He turned down the opportunity to join the Ashington Group of pitmen painters.
Bill's work as a colliery electrician gave him access to all parts of the mine, providing him with the ability to paint a wide-range of scenes from memory.
