Professional artist and former miner Dr Aidan Doyle was born and bred in Gateshead. He studied at Bath Lane College of Arts and Technology in Newcastle before completing a degree in Fine Art at Winchester School of Art in 1977.
In 1991, Aidan began visiting the last deep coal mines in the Durham Coalfield, feeling duty bound to document them before they closed. His thousands of photographs provided the basis for sketches, paintings and prints as well as his first publication – a photographic record of the end of mining in the region. He completed a PhD in Sociology at Durham University in 2001, based on his research into the social implications of the coal mining industry in the North East.
From his studio in Newcastle Arts Centre, Aidan worked in a diverse range of media, including oil, pastel, ink and watercolour.
